"Jingle" Designers Give the Holidays.... a Haircut?

"I’ve always felt Christmas is more than just red and green – it’s about bold touches of colors like purple and orange.” explained ASID Interior Design’s Patrick J. Baglino, Jr. about giving the season some color treatment.

Local interior designers - on a mission to stop limiting holiday decorations to clichéd red and green - are decking the halls of the Four Seasons in Georgetown as part of the 6th annual Georgetown Jingle. From angels made out of recycled maps to a tree with more bling than a display at Tiffany’s & Co., the yearly benefit, and its 12 themed trees, brim with innovative holiday spirit through Christmas and benefit the Georgetown University Hospital’s pediatric oncology programs.

Among the dazzlers on display are Gary Lovejoy’s pyramid of personal elements - like favorite hobby and interest items - in clear boxes; SCS Interiors’ Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey turns to fishing wire: stringing the ornaments, and hanging them from a chandelier in the dining room. Dee Thronton of Houseworks Interiors found inspiration on vacation, designing a Caribbean-themed tree with a fish frenzy of ornaments.

Tradition tree or no, the designers stress knowing what fits your personal style. “It’s like finding a good haircut!" notes Rosie Sauser of Cultivated Gardens. "Look at a bunch of magazines, clip the photos you like, and you’ll discover [your] decorating style.”

Here's your tip: The" trees "on display are also for sale. But hurry, hotel guests have already snapped one up!

Magic & Miracles 2011: Well, well, Wells!

Attendees at Ready, Willing & Working's 4th annual Magic & Miracles event weren't expecting literal magic and miracles at the Ritz Wednesday night, but then, they met the miracle Men in Blue... as well as saw slight of hand, Magician Aedryan Methyus' telepathy experiment, and a "performing" politician!

"I am very familiar with the Men in Blue," said Councilmember Tommy Wells, the lone political attendee from the event's honorary Host Committee, speaking of the formerly homeless or incarcerated men who now receive paid work opportunities and supportive services through RWW. "This program makes me proud of our city."

Guests agreed that Wells should also be proud of his candor... and his stand-up comedy skills. After his introduction by program host Kojo Nmamdi, Wells, calling the emcee "an old-school throwback," delivered some humble political pie - and some of the best lines of the night.

"Kojo, you don't even know the word 'snark,' I think... What gives [The Political Hour] extra polish is your contrast with the rough and - kind of not well spoken - Tom Sherwood," he joked. "I'm proud... that you're keeping our residents informed of the latest things happening in DC government. Some things are actually good that happen. But, well... that's not on your show much."

Morals Across the Map: L'Histoire du Soldat Debuts at Russian Embassy

"Tonight isn't about international trade, or even international economics," suggested H.E. Manuel Sager (Ambassador of Switzerland) as he co-hosted an evening at the Embassy of the Russian Federation with H.E. Sergey Kislyak (Ambassador of Russia) Tuesday night. "It's about international culture!"

The political pair presented - in collaboration with the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation - Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale) to an intimate group in the Embassy's ballroom, preceeded (as well as followed by) a reception featuring some of Russia's best hospitality - vodka and caviar!

"[L'Histoire du Soldat] is seldom heard, and that's unfortunate," shared H.E. Sager. "But it's good for us here tonight!"

The story, based on a Russian folk tale, was written in French by a Swiss writer, C.F. Ramuz, whom Sager claimed - with some degree of sarcasm - was so lauded for his work that he was put on the country's 200 franc note. In the parable, the soldier makes a trade with the devil and learns just what greed can get you.

But if the audience expected all to end well, they were in the wrong place. "That's the difference between Europe and the United States," said a Swiss Embassy official. "We're not always expecting a happy ending."

Will (Shakespeare) Physically Comes to Washington

It's hard to make a personal appearance when you're centuries old, yet if anyone can do it, it's the timeless Bard. On this trip, he won't be waxing poetic, however. He'll just be waxing.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company today announced a partnership with Madame Tussauds to bring a wax figure of William Shakespeare to Washington, D.C. - the first U.S. public appearance of the statue - in celebration of STC's 25th Anniversary Season.

Shakespeare arrived just in time for the opening performances of his "Much Ado About Nothing" and will be on display to "meet and greet" at the Company's Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) through May 31, 2012.

Coy Koi... Needing to Be Caught

It's an unusual rescue mission. The Washington Humane Society Law Enforcement team has lately been working hard to save the scaly instead of the scruffy, pets with fins instead of fluff.

Earlier this summer, a local resident dumped hundreds of koi into the pond and pools of Meridian Hill Park. Those stunning swimmers have been delighting guests of the greenspace for months, but danger looms for the pretty pets.

The Park's pools are set to be drained for winter weather this Wednesday (11/30) and a daunting number of koi remain to be caught and relocated.

Black Friday Fete Decks the Walls

In the midst of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday were a duo of artistic divas out to sell some overstock.

Maggie O'Neill and Dominique Fierro invited art appreciatives and the social set out to L2 Lounge Friday night for a gallery get-together of sorts in an effort to showcase their respective artwork, offering them as bargain buys. The pair, which has worked together on such local projects as Lincoln Restaurant and the upcoming Irish Whiskey Public House, not only needed to clean out their studio spaces for 2012 creativity, but also hoped to help their friends with some unique holiday shopping.

As attendees caught up with one another after Thanksgiving feasts, they imagined decking the walls of their own homes with Fierro photographs or O'Neill paintings... and wrapping them up as well.

"These are all one of a kinds," said Fierro as she mingled through cocktailers to show some canvases. "Giving something like this is fun and different."

Teen Actress Heather Braverman on Films, Fashion and Food Allergies

Teen role model Heather Braverman was one of the featured speakers at the 6th Annual Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN™) Teen Summit held last weekend at the Key Bridge Marriott. The actress, who plays “Samantha” in the soon to be released film, Jeremy Fink and The Meaning of Life, addressed teens about living with food allergies.. and answered our questions about some of life's other fun and frustrations.

KSK: How did you find out you had food allergies?
HB: I was 4 years old. I was at a TCBY and I pointed to peanut butter chips to put on my yogurt. I took one bite and immediately got sick...and learned I had life threatening food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish.

KSK: What's the worst thing you are allergic to... and how does it affect you?
HB: When I was younger I couldn't have the birthday cakes at all the parties I attended because they could contain nuts or have cross contamination. I can't eat in bakeries or have baked goods where other products with nuts are made. So at the parties I would have to bring a "safe snack" to have while everyone else enjoyed the birthday cake.

KSK: That is sad! How about now that you're older?
HB: Being a teenager, I face new challenges. I now have started dating...which means kissing. I have to be sure my boyfriend has not eaten nuts or shellfish or I can possibly have a reaction from a kiss. This is...very frustrating!

KSK: You're an ideal spokesmodel for this cause because you're in the public eye. So, let's talk about your acting. What has been your favorite role?
HB: My favorite role so far had to be playing Sabrina Farber in Law and Order SVU. It was very challenging to be in a closed trunk of a car in 90 degree weather covered in fake blood -- if only for a few seconds. The best part was when Christopher Malone saves me and and pops open the trunk and carries me like a baby to get help. I loved the cast and especially getting my makeup done with all this blood and cuts.

KSK: And you have a new movie coming out. Are you a fashionista like the role you play?
HB: I loved playing Samantha in Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life. Samantha is a true fashionista... and I have to say that Samantha and I are very similar. We both love clothing, accessories and makeup. The movie is great -- except for the fact that the main character loves peanut butter and speaks about it throughout the movie. He even says his sweat smells like peanut butter because he eats so much of it. Well of course when I was around he could not be eating that!

Talking Turkey... and Presidential Pardons

What would the star of this holiday supper be most thankful for? A Presidential pardon, of course! Each year (and especially since 2002), a special ceremony spares a pair of birds from slaugher and sends them on their merry way to a long life of leisure and luxury.

So what's the story on these grateful gobblers? Well, this year's birds are from Minnesota - interestingly, the largest turkey producing state in the U.S. - and yes there are two of them. Only one is a performer in the pardoning ceremony; the alternate gets pardoned as well, but is more of a "stunt double" of sorts, in case the main attraction gets antsy... And (watch out!) this year's turkey is "a bit of a flier,” according to W Hotel publicist Barbara Martin.

How would she know? Well, tonight (Tuesday), just as last year, the young trotter will enjoy his/their own custom suite at the W, gorging on berries and acorns before dressing up to head to the White House where he's traditionally pardoned in the Rose Garden in what last year President Obama joked was "one of the most important duties [that I carry out as President]."

And then... well, here's where he'll get really thankful. Post pardoning, the birds are off to George Washington's estate, where they will continue to celebrate holiday festivities with much fanfare through December 6, and then live out their lives without any fear of ever sitting next to anyone's Thanksgiving cranberry sauce and stuffing.

Beaujolais (and Beauty) Nouveau

“Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé!” The new Beaujolais has arrived! To celebrate the arrival of the purple-pink, fruity wine, the Alliance Française hosted its annual Beaujolais Nouveau party at the historic Washington Club on Dupont Circle Friday evening.

Despite the night's freezing temperatures, DC’s francophiles came in full force to give a nod to Fall and the fruits of this year’s harvest. Attendees enjoyed modern music and classic jazz, a silent auction, dinner buffet, and of course, toasted with lots of wine.

Not to be outdone by the great grapes, French fashion also took center stage during the event as fashionistas had the opportunity to view sample pieces from the Woodley Park-based boutique Carbon and take some style tips from its chic owner Katherine Limon.

“I see a lot of good variety. There are people here who are hip and willing to take a risk by wearing colored tights with their evening gown," noted local fashion designer Jennifer Elizabeth Miller. "Then, of course, there are those who are more subtle and go with clean lines. For the most part, DC has got stylish and interesting people.”

Beaujolais and beauty... cheers to that!

The Washington that Would Have Been

Ever wonder what Washington would be like if politics (and Politics) hadn't given us the pretty city we have today? Unbuilt Washington, a new exhibit at the National Building Museum (opening November 19th) tells how the Capital City we take for granted might have looked had designs been different... and it can be a bit disorienting!

The exhibit is a collection of could-have-beens that would have drastically changed the architectural character of the capital, featuring original and replicated renderings of unused plans for most of DC's best loved landmarks.

What if... the Capitol dome was instead a clucking chicken? The White House were replaced by a palatial mansion on Meridian Hill? A statue of Washington sat atop the first stump of the obelisk when his monument was halted about halfway through (in 1856)? Memorial Bridge looked more like London Bridge? Or DC had a National Sofa?

These and other unrealized designs from 1791 to the present challenge common assumptions about the appearance of the city and some of its most prominent buildings, and they highlight the complex decisions and debates that actually built Washington... and makes Unbuilt Washington seem so unfathomable.

Related Programming: Tours start (December 19th) showcasing some of the most unusual of the proposed city plans that thankfully did not determine the shape of DC on December 19th. The City Unimagined (an Unbuilt Washington Film Festival) kicks off Feb. 22, 2012 at the AFI Silver Theatre, and a lecture with exhibit curator G. Quidam

If you've ever seen a Cirque du Soleil performance, you know it's not your typical juggling, clowns and trapeze circus... but a show of human agility, strength and bravery. It's also usually a "circus" with a story. Well, kind of.

Quidam, one of Cirque's original repertoire, returns to DC - this time creating a "big top" at the Verizon Center for eight performances only - to tell the scattered story of little Zoe, who longs for the fun and excitement she feels is just beyond her reach.

In ten acts, including aerial contortion, skipping rope, hand balancing, diabolos and banquine (you just have to see it) Zoe dives into an eerie reverie and a universal spectacle.

Still not sure of the story? Well, when you're mesmerized, those details are just distracting.

Jerry 'Occupies" the Scoop

Rejected from over 25 medical school programs and on his last dollar (or two), Jerry Greenfield and his middle school bestie Ben Cohen split the fee for a $5 class on how to make ice cream... and the rest is history, shared Greenfield at the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington's annual Network Event Wednesday evening at the Wardman Park Marriott.

The duo, which has since sold their ice cream company (Ben & Jerry's) to Unilever, continues to create creams with unique flavors and entertaining names. And they're still scooping... traveling the nation, providing free ice cream for "occupy" protesters - groups of which they are "very supportive."

Ben & Jerry's early struggles made them sympathetic. In their own way, they hope to help "occupiers" to lick it!

Investing in Women: "Women's Liberation is Men's Liberation"

The Polish Embassy took a hit during DC’s freak earthquake earlier this Fall; but that didn’t stop the Foundation for Social and Cultural Advancement from celebrating its third year boosting women’s education across the world. Moved to the Center for American States, last night’s benefit gala, entitled “Investing in the Whole Woman,” highlighted the nonprofit’s mission to empower women within their communities.

“A lot of programs focus on teaching a girl how to read, but what good is that really going to do [without also giving her the need or desire to do so],” explained Dr. Sophia Aguirre, President of Foundation SCA and Professor of Economics at Catholic University. That’s why Aguirre and her colleagues around the world identify local education programs that “focus on the whole person,” and provide funding and technical support.

Though Aguirre hopes to expand to different types of programs in the future, targeting women’s education has been a priority because of its “multiplier effect”—investing in women delivers results for them but also for their communities.

Guest speaker and distinguished philanthropist Edward W. Scott, Jr. gave a different reason. “Women’s liberation is men’s liberation!” he joked.

Memphis BBQ owners Chris George and Yolanda George Turman have taken their Tennessee roots and turned them into a family restaurant, opening up a semi-formal establishment for 'que enthusiasts who want more than just meat on the menu.

By George! Salmon, shrimp and crab 'que creations flavor up the fare... though the Smokey Mountains have more smoke than Memphis' singular BBQ sauce. The Memphian owners, who have also spent time in more southern states, confess that BBQ baby back ribs are personal favorites -- and these are the most perfected of their plates.

But, in a surprise twist on Tennessee, it's a rich roux app that steals all of the attention. Absolutely do not miss the Gumbo - likely the best all of the appetizers straight from Appalachia.

Wednesday evening, 6-8 PM, Nick Hanzlik, the artist behind celeb-loved stationery company R. Nichols (we hear Tyra and Sheryl Crow are faithful fans), launches his first-ever collection of DC-themed holiday cards at Neiman Marcus in Chevy Chase. The Sidwell Friends alum - who has since graduated to L.A. - will be signing limited-edition prints of his cards for one night only (but you can still buy 'em after at NM or in Bethesda at Ginger).

"I couldn't be more excited about my trip to Washington and appearance at Neimans," says Hanzlik, whose cards are infinitely cuter than the typical DC-monument-in-the-snow scene. "I grew up there, and haven't been back in awhile, so this collection - and that city - are really special to me."

KSK: Which of the national monuments/DC landmarks do you think should be Santa's favorite to visit?
RN: I'd have to say the Washington Monument. Tactically, I just think the frozen reflecting pool would make such a perfect little runway for the sleigh.

KSK: Does DC strike you more as the "Happy Holidays," "Merry Christmas," or "Season's Greetings" kind?
RN: All of the above. They should all be shouted all the time . You can never have enough holiday cheer.

KSK: Do you advocate for real trees or artificial ones? What's your favorite/iconic Christmas tree?
RN: This is a tough one and my position has changed over the years. Today I would say artificial - HOWEVER - should you come upon a Christmas tree lot after December 22nd - PLEASE give one (or several) of those pitiful, passed over and forgotten trees a home. I swear I can hear them softly sobbing and calling to me when I drive by - it's almost worse than a trip to the pound...
Growing up we used to go to The White House every year for a Christmas party (my Dad worked in several administrations), and the tree in the Blue Room was always my fave.

KSK: Are you a strictly white lights guy, or do colored lights get some Hanzlik love?
RN: I think colored lights reek of the 70's (they're in all of our family Christmas photos). But that's not a bad thing. I've been using white lights for years (they work with my very edited designer aesthetic) but I do have a penchant for that era so it just might be time to switch (I've been thinking a lot lately about the elaborate layered parfaits my Mom used to labor over to serve at her DC dinner parties growing up - I'd like to revisit those too).

KSK: Who should be #1 on your list of holiday cards to send?
RN: Anyone you are upset with, mad at, or holding a grudge against. I believe in sugar, not vinegar.

Over 800 people in "vintage garb" participated in Sunday's 3rd annual DC Tweed Ride, a fancypants gathering traditionally organized by the Dandies & Quaintrelles (and now supported by various and sundry sponsors). It was a day for mustaches and mid-length skirts, jodhpurs and suspenders, fascinators and sport coats; "refined style and purposeful living..." as the social group attempts to convey.

It was also a day for taking clothing trends and making conversational ones. Tweeders in DC succeeded at creating a trending topic for a short while on Twitter. Character count and thread count collide!

The annual bicycle ride (or run as has been adopted in some surrounding states) is a complementary social celebration to its warmer weather Seersucker Social in the Spring.

Jersey Boys, Hit Songs and Must-Hear Story "Works its Way Back" to Washington

Separated into four seasons, each narrated by a different band member in his own perspective, the audience is "Beggin'" to learn more about this band which went head to head with the Beatles, sold 175 million records worldwide (all before they hit the age of 30) and got out of Jersey, even if they just couldn't get the Jersey out.

DC's Toughest Restaurant Reservation

Every so often (well, all the time, actually) there's a mania over Minibar. This Jose Andres restaurant, located over what is now Andres' America Eats Tavern (405 8th Street NW), has Washingtonians salivating over its famous 26 course, $200+pp menu and interactive chef experience.

But it's not just the culinary curiosities and the small space (this place only has six seats!) that have local foodies in a frenzy. Reaching someone to make a reservation can be as frustrating as Facebook's constant layout changes!

"The best way to secure a reservation is to call at 10:00 AM -- and keep calling until someone picks up," said a representative of the restaurant, who also suggested that date flexibility is ultimately helpful.

Special occasion reservations are next to impossible to accommodate, but most dedicated callers (who claimed they got through within a few busy signals or after being placed on hold) landed a seating within about 2 months of the call-in date. And cancellations happen, so always say yes to the waitlist!

Senator Scott Brown (R-MA, at left) might have stolen the show, but it's tough to compete with an American Idol and a roomful of men in uniform.

Brown was on-board (so much so that he was greeting guests and pointing out the coat closet!) for both the cause and the spirit of celebration Thursday evening at the City Tavern Club for the American Heroes Ball, a night in recognition of Veteran’s Day and to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

The inaugural event featured a live performance by American Idol Finalist Ayla Brown - yes, that Scott's own daughter (above left) - and her band from Nashville, playing original tunes and some covered country favorites.

Chair Philip Ballard joined guests David Miller, Cherie Short, Seda Atam, Caroline McMillan, and Jim McInerney for drinks, dancing and a silent auction of coveted prizes, like Philadelphia 76ers basketball tickets, spa baskets, an I.Gorman necklace and a private tour of the Capitol... by Senator Scott Brown!

Knock Out Abuse/Fight Night: Charity Parties Collide

After the annual Fight Night and Knock Out Abuse philanthropy dinners, its an annual tradition for the guys and gals to meet up at the Ritz Carlton for some frisky fun.

This year, James L. Jones III (Fight Night Chair) led his entourage of men from the Washington Hilton - who had been scotching, cigaring and sparring over the annual boxing entertainment, all for childrens' charities - to the Ritz Carlton, where the Jaci Wilson Reid's (Knock Out Abuse Chair) group of women - who had been feting best selling novelist Linda Fairstein and combatting domestic violence - were anxiously awaiting.

Some 800 women in "St. Tropez Chic" and a larger number of tuxedoed men came together for a cash bar, lively dance floor and to relive the evening events' major moments.

Among those in attendance at the afterparty: Mayor Vincent Gray, chef Jose Andres, Cindy Jones, John Cecchi, Sharon Bradley, Winston Lord, Maggy O'Neill, and Councilmember Vincent Orange.

"Street" Style

Nomatter on which side of the street he struts, a man in DC has style options these days. That street style is the raison d'etre for the HMX Group's new "Streets" concept, which opened in Georgetown in late September, yet held its grand opening event Wednesday night.

Designer Joseph Abboud made a personal appearance, greeting such guests as Donald Syriani, Ebong Eka, Don Patron and Jimmy Lynn at the second U.S. Streets store (the first is in Beverly Hills), explaining how each location fits its fashions to its locale.

"Streets of Georgetown," located in what was formerly Reiss at 1254 Wisconsin Ave, brings all six of HMX's labels under one roof - with two levels of "look." Casual trends take the bottom floor, with more tailored options on high.

It's where retail hits the road.

Literary Death Match

DC9 packed a full house Tuesday night as it played host to the critically-acclaimed literature read-off known as Literary Death Match, now halfway through a nineteen-city tour across North America. Four writers—including Huffington Post blogger Sean Carman, author Sacha Scoblic, comedienne Vijai Nathan, and two-time Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam Champion Jamaal May—each performed seven-minute segments of their most eclectic writing, ranging from memoirs to political satire to poetry; while a panel of three judges (armed with Velcro darts if ever the performers went over time) provided comedic value and thoughtful critique.

“We’re having fun but we’re serious about the kind of fun we’re going to have,” explained LDM creator and Opium Magazine founder Todd Zuniga. Seeing a need to make literature more accessible and exciting to the public (and hoping to sell a couple magazines along the way), Zuniga launched the LDM circuit in 2006, to “’trick’ people into seeing great writers read their own work.”

“I think DC is interested and hungry for this kind of thing,” he said, citing last night’s show as one of the best he’s seen. “A lot of people came up afterwards and asked, ‘How could you have judged that story against the other story?’ That’s sort of the point.”

But don’t tell that to Scoblic. She was declared winner, after all.

The Hollywood Oscar buzz has already begun, but J. Edgar's story - and estate - will always be a Washington one.

"Embracing the idea of shooting a film about J. Edgar Hoover was quite an interesting project because he was such an interesting man and there’s always been a lot of discussion around him,' said Clint Eastwood, on hand at the Newseum Tuesday evening to debut J. Edgar with the National Law Enforcement Museum and Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film is an in-depth examination of the life of the first FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover, as portrayed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Law enforcement is a very underrated profession," said Eastwood before the evening's film preview. "The dangers are always there and we’re thankful for the people who keep us safe."

A (mostly underground) museum to honor those people - law enforcement - is set to open near Judiciary Square in late 2013... when the J. Edgar obsession will move from movie to museum.

As announced in tandem with the film preview, the National Law Enforcement Foundation has donated more than 5,000 items from Director Hoover’s estate to the new venue, including his office desk, chair and telephone, presentation items, awards, photographs, correspondence, books, recordings of his speeches, and numerous other items that relate to his personal and professional life, including his tenure as director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972.

Mike Isabella Puts Mexican on M Street

This isn't his Grandmother's kitchen - technically, it's Jonathan Umbel's - but Chef Mike Isabella, famous from Top Chef and his just-like-my-family-made-it Grafiatto eatery, announced plans this week to open a second restaurant in DC.

Bandolero, described as a "modern Mexican small-plates concept," is set to take the place of what was Hook (3241 M St. NW) before it closed due to fire in June.

Umbel, who owns the space, has reportedly given the Italian celeb chef carte blanche to go South Central.

“My vision for Bandolero is a high-energy, high-volume restaurant to match the bustling vibe of the Georgetown neighborhood and feed the late-night appetite of its college students," explained Isabella. "The menu will change frequently with my twist on classic Mexican dishes and a large cocktail menu."

On the fast track to open as early as February 2012, expect enticing salsas, guacamoles, ceviches, "tons of" tacos and “carbons” (which are Isabella's fajita innovation). What else is on tap? Prosecco, of course. It may be a Mexican menu, but Isabella won't back away from his home country bubbly.

A sparkly stunner from Adeler Jewelers, famously worn by Jennifer Lopez and Rhianna and featured in a recent issue of InStyle Magazine, was modeled around the VIP reception and silent auction tables of the Foundation's annual Night of Hope Gala Saturday evening -- with security detail in tow!

Though it had been worn by Hollywood and Radio Royalty, the evening's winner nabbed it at a nice price. With an advertised worth estimated at $21,000 (the piece was donated by the local jeweler), it fetched a cool $15,000 through silent auction.

PULSE Paints the Town Red

Members of the AHA's PULSE group, many wearing their best crimson cocktail dresses and dedicated to changing the health of a new generation, attended to give back to their community while making new connections.

Paint the Town Red's 2011 Chair, Stephanie Baucus (at left with her husband, Zeno Baucus) joined guests including Rory Pillsbury, Shelley Levi, Charles Paret, Cherie Short, and honored guest ABC7's Jennifer Donelan who shared the story of the heart attack she suffered at age 36.

New [Millennial] on the Block

Reaching Millennials has become the Holy Grail of communications, with everyone from politicians to the Pew Foundation trying to figure out: what makes these crazy kids tick (and click!)?

Since launching in October 2010 (and pending four potential spin-off sites), it seems that Lee Brenner (at left with Jayne Sandman) and Slade Sohmer—co-founders of the Millennial-seeking news site HyperVocal.com—might be on to something.

“It’s The Huffington Post meets Politico meets The Daily Show,” said Brenner at the site’s one-year anniversary party, held last night at RIAA downtown (a “social enterprise,” proceeds from the event went to Musicians on Call, a nonprofit that brings musicians to hospitals). Brenner, Sohmer, and contributors world-wide— self-described “Internet Sherpas”—bring sports, politics, entertainment and other news to the Facebook generation, in their vernacular. (Got a story idea, for example? The site asks for “Just The Tip”….)

“It cuts through all the bull. It is non-partisan, but we call people out in the political world. And we have fun with it.”

"I'm the voice of the Washington Wizards... except for tonight!" joked Steve Buckhantz, who was available to emcee Men Against Breast Cancer's 9th annual Think Pink and Blue Awards Gala Wednesday evening at Macy's due to the NBA lock-out.

"Tonight was supposed to be our first game, so we should all be on the air at the Verizon Center. That's not going to happen, at least for another month... but we'll all keep our fingers crossed."

Buckhantz, joked about sports, but was more serious about the rest of his script. Those were Maxim models and bottles at the club Monday night, when Maxim Magazine took over The Park for one in their 15 coast-to-coast city series of Halloween masquerade parties. Continuing its every holiday tradition, The Mighty Pint held a costumed Keg Kill in honor of Halloween Sunday evening. Pitting the "Good Guys" (Mighty Pint Staff and Supporters) against the "Villains" (actually, an exceptionally large group, mostly from the Boomerang Bus), the teams battled it out over pitchers of beer to see who could be the first to tap their keg of brew.

Overpowered by the sheer force of evil, the "Good Guys" conceded defeat... but not really. The bar - a Pittsburghers paradise - had just seen a Steelers win over the New England Patriots - so the team shared their keg with fans in celebration.

Brit Nick Skelton took top honors, a $100,000 purse and ultimate bragging rights after the Washington International Horse Show that took place at the Verizon Center last week/end.

The Olympic veteran, riding mount Carlo 273, not only won the President's Cup Grand Prix with its grand monetary prize, but also wowed the crowd with a jump of 7' on Unique to clear the Puissance Wall and captured the speed class prize on the same steed.

This was the first year that equestrian enthusiasts around the world could watch this World Cup qualifier, a truly international event, that is a peak stop in the Fall and a fixture of the North American indoor council. Showing the Show over live webcast, viewers could get in on all of the competitive action... though they missed out on some of the excitement that defines this big final galloping through the heart of the big city.

If you’re still trying to find Waldo we’ve got a lead: he - and about thirty of his identical twins - were seen roaming the dance floor at Brightest Young Things’ Night at the Newseum IV Halloween Party last Friday night at the Newseum.

This year hosted “in 3D” (guests were handed 3D glasses to watch skeleton and lightning animations projected on a huge screen), the sold-out party packed the six-story venue with zombies, M&Ms, cheerleaders, muppets and more. Budding meteorologist pirates and Pac Man ghosts delivered weather forecasts at the Newseum’s mock television news studios, while Che Guevara and Muammar Gaddafi mingled at multiple cash bars (there was even one IN an elevator!). Ladybugs and bumblebees jammed into a Halloween photo booth,80s rockers rocked the ping pong tables, and the rest of the motley crowd danced to music spun by DJs Questlove, Woolfy and Adrian Loving.

The one let-down? There wasn’t a single candy bar at the scene! Luckily, though, you've still got tonight to satisfy that sweet tooth. Happy Halloween!

"If someone asks who I admire in politics, I'd say Valerie Jarrett! She's an inspiration to me and to all women." In turn, President Obama's special adviser and Chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls happily returned the compliment. "You are my hero and a role model for philanthropy around the world. You show people that you can do well and do good!"

An exclusive list of Washington's fashionistas including NBC's Angie Goff, Dr. Elena Allbritton, Catherine Reynolds and CBS White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell met with the designer during the cocktail reception. Proceeds from the evening benefited the Rebecca Project, a human rights organization that advocates for vulnerable women and girls in the US and Africa.

Jennifer Beals Honors the Promise, Talks Prevention

At a star-studded event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Friday evening, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® paid tribute to leaders in the fight against breast cancer and honored Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker's promise to her dying sister that she would do everything in her power to end the disease.

"All of us know someone," admitted Jennifer Beals, who was among the Hollywood stars in attendance to present the evening’s Awards of Distinction at a program which featured performances by singer Natasha Bedingfield, Grammy Award-winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari, opera singer Denyce Graves-Montgomery, and more.

"One of the problems is that the notion of cancer has been so normalized," said the actress best known for her roles as Alexandra Owens in the 1983 film Flashdance, and as Bette Porter on The L Word.

"You hear about it so often, and it's not ok... it's not ok to normalize this disease. And with all of the pinkwashing that goes on --where companies are selling products based on breast cancer month -- it's a lovely gesture, but consumers get so used to it that it becomes more normal."

And she argued for a dual focus for cure and prevention -- "We need to talk about potential environmental causes, because that's something we can do something about immediately."

"I'm not a scientist. I can donate money, I can help raise awareness.. and what I can definitely do in a more immediate sense is to not buy products that have known carcinogens in them."

“...I kiss'd thee ere I kill'd thee: no way but this; Killing myself, to die upon a kiss."

Those are the diabolical famous last words of one of Shakespeare’s most tragic heroes, Othello, whose tale is brought to stirring life at the Folger Theatre through December 4.

Othello (Owiso Odera) believes his wife Desdemona, played by the dainty blonde Janie Brookshire, is an adulteress, and in the end, strangles her in bed, rendering her one of the Bard’s most innocent victims. And he is led down this path of murderous rage by the scheming Iago, whose cunning is played to perfection by Ian Merrill Peakes.

It's the tale of the "kiss of death," with an electric performance by actors whose chemistry and physical dissimilarities provide a palpable force in their more intimate scenes together, all amplified by a Turkish set design, haunting music, rich oriental rugs, and belly dancers. But the best reason to see Othello may just be how it works through the themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal to make it one of the best shows at the Folger in the past year.

DC's kindest were treated to a sneak peek exhibit of Moby photography and acoustic song Thursday afternoon as the celeb singer brought his Destroyed tour to the launch of The Kindness Collective.

Moby, an outspoken supporter of veganism and animal rights, played and for such like-minded attendees as Elizabeth Kucinich, Director of Public Affairs for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and wife of Congressman and Dennis Kucinich; Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing Erica Meier; and bestselling author and President and Co-Founder of Farm Sanctuary Gene Baur, who noshed on vegan foods from Elizabeth’s Gone Raw, sipped Vegan Vine wines and Chocolate City Beer and left with a "cruelty-free" gift bag.

Working at the intersection of human and animal welfare - thus, enter Moby, The Kindness Collective and Founder Amber McDonald have dedicated its first major initiative to focusing on the pets of domestic violence survivors. (Up to 40% of domestic violence victims report that they are unable to escape their abusers because they fear for their pets when they leave.) The Kindness Collective hopes to bring an end to abuse by negotiating shelter for both victims and their companion pets at abuse assistance housing.

The launch event and Moby concert was held at The Montserrat House, an art gallery and experimental performance space created by Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton. Moby’s photography remains on public display thru November 5, 2011.

Bachelor Pad's Michelle Money Credits Social Media as Her "Savior'

Among those sporting the blue ribbon and promoting colon cancer awareness with Chris4Life Wednesday night at the Decatur House was one seriously social Bachelorette. As it turns out, Michelle Money, famous for her time on The Bachelor and The Bachelor Pad, is still living large online.

"Chris4Life heard about me through the Bachelor Pad. I think they saw the episode where I was talking about my Father and his struggle with colon cancer, and they actually reached out through a Tweet," said the starlet, who flew in from Utah to attend the cause's Blue Hope Bash.

"At that time, my Father had recently passed away and I was very eager to get on board with anyone related to the cause."

Money explained how she has used her social media circles both to handle the grieving process and begin to give back to cause-related organizations in the just ten short weeks since his passing.

"It's amazing how much support I have on Twitter. Not only have I had people praying for me and giving me advice, but I've been able to connect with doctors and get really great advice about the mourning process. Honestly, Twitter has been a savior for me."

But she admits that her willingness to share deeply personal posts can cause some drama.

"I am very open about everything in my life, and I think that...if I had never connected with people about my Father's passing, I would never be here,' she says as she looks around the room of Chris4Life supporters.

"I don't take things personally at all, but every now and then you get tweets about ridiculous things. Like last week, this girl had the audacity to accuse me over Twitter of using my Dad to get famous. I wish I could remember her handle, because I'd love to call her out for this!"

The social media scrimmage was all out war in the making, but Money kept her cool... and concentrated on the colon.

Before the bones, there are bites and beverages. As its name suggests, Ghosts and Goblets offers a fair share of libations as well as tasty treats provided by the restaurants of Barracks Row. National Press Club President Mark Hamrick described it as the digital duopoly of the "glittery and grimy," but TMZ Founder Harvey Levin insisted his #1-in-the-world entertainment news site/TV show/radio program/celebrity bus tour empire is actually "aggressive, but we've figured out a way of doing it that is relevant to what is going on today... [As a nation] we have our eyes on the wrong thing a lot, but it's not limited to celebrity."

Speaking at the Press Club's renowned speakers series, Levin spoke about how he's managing "an industry in trouble" and creating a workable niche. "I bet Tom Brokaw is not gonna talk about Lindsay Lohan in the morning!" he laughed in reference to the upcoming luncheon schedule.

"Every day when I walk into my office, I walk in scared about what's happening to the business. But I don't run scared looking at others. I run scared of myself... In five years, this will be a radically different business, and my effort is being spent on blending the elements." Blending... and building trust. "Trust is the biggest thing."

He admits he's also spending time preparing for a TMZ DC, and a relocation to the Beltway may be in his future. "It's gonna happen, someday. I want to do TMZ DC more than anything... but I realized it will require me to be here for a while." Politicos, prepare to mind your Ps and Qs!

Solen's No Longer a Secret

Şerefe! (or "cheers" in Turkish) to Dupont Circle’s Agora Restaurant, which unveiled its second-floor private dining space - the Solen Room - Monday evening.

Over a glass of the traditional Turkish drink raki, Agora’s general manager Ismail Uslu had difficulty explaining the chemical composition of the drink to guests. He noted, “I hate chemistry but I know what tastes good! And trust me, everything on the menu is so good that it all goes right into my tummy! Can’t you tell? Look how round it is!”

The good humor extended well into the night as the intimate group of media guests including Jason of DCFud.com, Greg O'Neill of Greg’s List DC, and Girl Meets Food founder Mary Kong mingled and sampled Mediterranean cuisine prepared by executive chef Ghassan Jarrouj.

Though Uslu insisted on keeping the recipes a secret, Jarrouj laughed as he reminded guests that “all the recipes are already online if you want to try making it!”

Inside Boxwood: A VIP Tour and Tank Tasting

With DC Wine Week well underway in the District, other opportunistic oenophiles took a 'swirl, sip and spit' roadtrip to the nearby Boxwood Estate vineyard in Virginia for a rare tour and tank tasting experience.

With Middleburg's harvest and grape pressing at an end, requests for tours of local wineries - and the chance to taste the fruits of their labor - increase in late Fall. But this walkabout, hosted personally by Boxwood's EVP Rachel Martin, was even more wonderful.

An intimate group gathered to taste directly from the tallest tanks of fermenting (soon-to-be-barrelled) wine, listen to the malolactic fermentation in Boxwood's oak barrel aging room, check out the winery's own bottling line and sample the estate's finest finished product.

Boxwood, Topiary and Boxwood Trellis wines are available on site, online and in the winery's retail Tasting Rooms Wine Bars around the region.

Over 500 Washingtonians came together Friday evening to celebrate Fair Chance at the 5th Annual Butterfly Bash. Honorary Chair, Katharine Weymouth (WaPo Publisher) joined Founder, Amanda Marshall, and Co-Chairs Julie Maner and Megan Rupp at the Mellon Auditorium to positively impact the lives of over 54,000 children in DC's greatest communities of need.

“When I started Fair Chance in 2002, my vision was to provide dynamic and passionate nonprofit leaders with critical business skills so they could not only help more children, but be around for years to come to support the families who were counting on them the most. And, it has worked!" Marshall beamed.

The 2011 Butterfly Bash smashed previous years’ fundraising records, bringing in $200,000 including more than $22,000 raised in a live auction at the event.

DC Wine Week Toasts the Town

Wine enthusiasts in the District have reason to celebrate with the arrival of DC Wine Week, which started off strong with its “Official Opening Bash” hosted at Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar in Capitol Hill on Saturday night.

The event, co-hosted by DC Event Junkie, Pivot Point Communications, DC Magazine, and other local supports was attended by such patrons of the pour as attorney/advocate Stef Woods, WUSA’s Lindsay Mastis and Patrick O’Brien -- all sampling the fruit of the vintner’s art. Hors d’oeuvres were also provided, with connoisseurs like Food and Wine Diva Summer Whitford on hand to enjoy them.

Of course, the opening reception was just that – the opener - according to Lisa Byrne, DC Wine Week organizer. Wine Week runs from Saturday the 15^th to Saturday the 22^nd. Drink to the full schedule... available here.

Thursday night, the official Moët and Chandon oenologist, Marc Brevot, hosted an exclusive vintage champagne and food pairing at DC's own Zentan. Together with Zentan's executive chef, Suser Lee, Brevot and his team put together an exquisite five-course menu paired with some of Moët and Chandon's finest vintage champagnes.

Moët Rose Imperial... Moet Grand Vintage 2002... 1992 Blanc Moët Grand Vintage... flutes couldn't stop begging for more. "2002 is our latest vintage champagne on the market and worldwide," explained Brevot, "an exciting vintage because the year had fantastic weather, great potential, and gave the wine more than 7 years in the cellar. It gave the wine a deep harmony in its creation."

While the words "Moët & Chandon" certainly invoke a number of iconic descriptors like "exceptional," "elegant," and "luxurious," dinner guests may now associate "trendy and tasty" with their champagne pairings.

Even the pens were doing pirouettes Thursday night as the Washington Ballet hosted a "Great Gatsby" get together at Tysons Galleria's brand new Montblanc. The international jeweler invited guests to the grand opening of its new spacious boutique that featured the company's recently expanded offerings (timepieces, eyewear, leather goods, and fragrances) as well as it core businesss (dating back to 1924), “jewelry that writes."

Patrons cocktailed while perusing collections including Montblanc's Christopher Columbus pen (at left) -- The Galleria's display boasts Number 12 in a series of only 14 ever made -- a diamond-studded jeweled pen with engravings in the Toledo style, listing for a cool $67,000.

In keeping with Montblanc's philosophy of quality craftsmanship becoming art, the company's patronage extends to its local sponsorship of the Washington Ballet’s reprisal of The Great Gatsby at The Kennedy Center (November 2-6). FW Fetes 3 Years

"Fashion is more than your clothing, it's your home," argued The Washington Post's FW Publisher Jenny Abramson and her team at Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams Thursday evening.

To fete the publication's 3rd year, FW held an anniversary soiree and decor discussion at the 14th Street showroom with guests of honor Mitchell Gold and HGTV Apartment Therapy interior designer Sally Steponkus.

"Trends right now are anything tribal, ethnic, or travel related," Steponkus told the crowd lounging on the store's furniture pieces and sipping Voli vodka cocktails. "And wall paper is making a comeback!"

"People think of Washington as beige homes, more beige... and a navy suit," Abramson chimed in as the Q & A came to a close. "But I think that what many of us have finally realized over these three years is that Washington is actually cool."

Her final words of wisdom: "Keep dressing well."

As part of a month of foodie events intended to Take a Bite Out of Breast Cancer, Done Like Dundee... Gone Like Ghandi writer Anthony Rivera hosted an evening of bites to benefit Pink Jams! Tuesday at Foggy Bottom's Tonic Restaurant.

Take a Bite Founder (and Dining in DC author) Lisa Shapiro was also on hand to greet event guests and support Anthony as a cause Ambassador.

"My sister, Christa Floresca, and her non-profit, Pink Jams!, are putting on a huge runway event later in October and this month of Take a Bite restaurant events was organized as a way to help her advocate and bring more awareness to her event and the larger cause," explained Shapiro.

"Anthony's involvement also resulted from breast cancer touching his family... sadly, multiple members. It's hard when it touches those you love. But it's fun to have his Mother here tonight having a bite with us!"

Smug Mugs at Capital City Brewery's Oktoberfest

Prost! Cheers! Willkommen! Washingtonians and beer aficionados raised their glasses on Saturday for Capital City Brewery's 12th annual Oktoberfest.

Following a tradition from Germany that started in the 1880's, this year's Oktoberfest hosted over 8,500 guests in Shirlington's village in Arlington, VA. Revelers drank and sampled over 100 beers of the world's greatest ales and lagers from 40 local DC breweries. Notable breweries included Victory Brewing, Stone, Rogue, Dogfish and Troegs among many local microbreweries. And what's a beer festival without great food? Washington Sangerbund provided authentic German cuisine of bratwurst and pretzels, Capital City's tent sizzled up burgers and fries, delicious samosas were available from Aroma, and Irish fare was at its best from Samuel Beckett's Irish Pub to name a few.

The man behind such a successful event: David von Storch, Capital City's co-founder and President, started the brewery in 1991 and now has 3 locations in the DC/VA area. Capital City Brewery opened its doors in 1992 as the first brew pub in the nation's capital since prohibition and continues to provide one of the best annual beer events for the DC area.

Mya Celebrates Birthday at DC's Lux Lounge

This weekend, Grammy Award Winning singer Mya celebrated her birthday at DC's Lux Lounge. Her personal hairstylist for the evening, James Cornwell (who can also be found at the PR @ Partners in Friendship Heights) not only perfected the look of her locks, but styled her wardrobe as well.

"Mya is so cool and laid back, she was helping her friends get ready while I was getting her ready," Cornwell told K Street Kate. "We chose the outfit first, with a "vote" happening between friends and the team. It was fun...then Mya and I collaborated on what the hair should look like... knowing it could get hot and that she loves to dance, we decided a long flowing pony tail would be best, especially to last for the night!"

"She let me be creative with the look for her eyes, cheeks, and lips, and when she looks in the mirror then looks at me with a smile and says "NICE" - man, that's a good feeling!"

In addition to dancing the night away at Lux Lounge, Mya had a special request of her friends for her borthday, asking that they make a donation to the North Shore Animal League: a charity for which she'll be doing a Marathon to raise funds in the future.

Fashion designer and DRESSED star Nary Manivong admits that what you wear is important... but who you know is the real pushbutton for power. Washingtonians have always known that networking is a secret to success. Apparently the fashion world is no different.

"Fashion is all about relationships!" he sang into the stylish crowd at Bethesda Row's Landmark Theater last Thursday evening. Well-heeled guests like THE Artist Agency President Lynda Erkiletian, Conversa Group's Nichole Devolites, and Mix 107.3's Chilli Amar arrived in full force fashion to watch the exclusive DC premiere of DRESSED by David Swajeski - and maybe network their way to a Manivong notice.

The documentary tells Manivong's emotional journey and road to success from homeless and abandoned youth to style industry innovator. As Capitol File editor-in-chief Kate Bennett (moderator of the after screening Q & A) observed, "It feels good to see a success story!"
